WHAT’S UP?

Why, Lots of brightly colored wood, of course!

Today’s lesson is on how to dress up a wall in a minimal way, and putting your own personality into it! The possibilities are as abundant as your imagination and can pull any room together.

3. CHOOSE A DESIGN

Brainstorming is crucial. Ask yourself:

What is the purpose of this room?

Will this feature surround existing furniture that I should center on rather than the middle point in the room?

Do I want it to completely cover the wall from end to end?

Do I want to add some shelving within the design?

Featured design:

1” x 2” x 96” Pine Wood for this project

Spaced 4.25” apart

Tip: All wood typically measures less in width and depth than its name so this piece is technically:

.75” D x 1.5” W x 96” L

3. SAND IT BABY

Whether you are sanding by hand or using an electric sander to save some time and effort, the trick is to start with a low number and work your way up.

Featured:

Started with #40, then #150, and finished with #220 (for some pieces)

Tip: If you have nicks and imperfections you would like to fix, apply the Dap Dex to these areas with your finger in a heaping manner.

Let Dry (indicated when the product turns white).

Sand over the area until smooth.

4. PAINTING PARTY

Lay out your pieces on an area that can spare paint splatters and get to rolling that paint.

Cardboard, plywood, newspaper or even just propping your piece up under a few bricks will do the job.

Once your pieces are dry, lay them out on the floor, treating the wall as the ceiling.

This will help you choose the optimal length and placement of your pieces. Taking a picture as you go helps give some perspective too, especially to help you keep track of which arrangement you like best!

Next, number your pieces in an inconspicuous place (the end or back of the stick). Sketching it out on some paper to note the distance you want certain pieces to come down from the ceiling will make installation a breeze.

Tip: Using a left over piece of wood, cut it to your desired spacing between pieces (featured space 4.25”) . You can use this as a quick reference when you install.

5. INSTALL

Find your center point of the wall to which you want the center of the design to land.

Place your center piece. Lay the level (parallel) against the piece to ensure its straight. Then nail the piece in place, one nail on the top, one in the center and one at the bottom.

Use your space to place the next piece in place, moving your spacer down as you nail the piece into place.

6. Final touches

Using the Dap Dex, wipe onto all of the nail holes and let dry.

Use #220 sandpaper to lightly sand, then touch up with you chosen paint.

Caulk around the edges of all of your design, including the ceiling. (see the difference from the phot above)
